Who is Nicholas?
Nicholas Trofimuk was the co-owner of Photogenesis Gallery, located in Santa Fe’s historic La Fonda Hotel, for over 35 years. The gallery closed following the passing of its director—and Nicholas’s wife of nearly sixty years—Joette O’Connor.
At his core, Nicholas is an artist who has chosen the camera, film, and photographic paper as his medium. He is best known for his mastery of black-and-white photography and the subtle, timeless beauty of sepia toning. In 2012, he began working with archival pigment prints. While these images are in color, Nicholas remains committed to authenticity: what you see is what he captured. Whether in color or black-and-white, each print is created to archival standards, using acid-free materials to ensure longevity.
Nicholas is known for his ability to capture beauty in all forms—whether it’s the sensual unfolding of a flower, the vast and rugged landscapes of New Mexico, or the urban charm of London, Paris, Chicago, and New York. His artistic vision is limitless. If a subject expresses beauty, Nicholas seeks to reveal it in a way that transports the viewer—physically, emotionally, or spiritually.
His advice:
“Take your time. Enjoy the search. Immerse yourself in the beauty. If your heart leads you there, choose something that speaks to your soul.”
— Nicholas Trofimuk
