There’s a real mix here, from Southwestern art to traditional antiques, and some of the strongest pieces are the ones tucked into the smaller collections.

Ernest Rancoulet was a French sculptor working in the late 19th century, known for highly detailed figural and allegorical sculpture, often in bronze. His work can range from relatively simple single figures to dense, theatrical compositions like this one, where overlapping bodies, animals, drapery and movement are packed into a single vertical group.

That complexity is part of what has kept Rancoulet’s sculpture active on the secondary market more than a century later. Hundreds of his works have appeared at auction, with the strongest examples distinguished by subject, scale, casting quality and composition.

This Ernest Rancoulet sculpture will be available at our estate sale this Saturday. Come see it in person, along with the rest of the collection.

Why did David Rudolph build a giant TV people could walk into?

When I first heard him talk about Big TV, what stood out wasn’t just the scale of it. It was how much he cared about what people would do once they got inside.
People could sit on the couch, interview each other, perform, joke around, or turn it into their own little show. And that the whole point.
For Rudolph, creativity was never limited to painters or sculptors. It was something people already had in them.

After leaving Spratling in 1939, Aguilar opened Taller Borda.
Then the war changed the market.
American companies looked to Mexico.
Taller Borda answered with military insignia, identification bracelets, costume jewelry, silverware, and bold modern designs that fit the moment.
Heavy. Sculptural. Articulated. Distinctly Mexican.
That combination helped Aguilar reach a much wider American audience and made Taller Borda one of Taxco’s major workshops.

In honor of Labor Day yesterday, we took a closer look at something antiques preserve especially well: the work itself.

Hand-etched copper, tramp art carving, brilliant-cut crystal, parquetry, micro-mosaic, embroidery, and Japanese basketry all carry visible evidence of the time, repetition, precision, and skill that went into making them.

In many antiques, the maker’s name is gone. The labor remains.

Throwback Thursday to the early days of Stephen’s.

Stephen Etre and Nick McKinney, shortly after taking over the Santa Fe consignment shop that would eventually become Stephen’s.

Things have changed since then (note Stephen's jet black hair), but this line feels surprisingly current: “Our inventory changes daily.”

Decades later, the idea is still much the same: art, antiques, furniture and unexpected finds, all under one roof. And as the article put it, “You never know what you might find!”

Zuni fetish carvings can carry different associations depending on the animal, and this collection has an incredible range of forms, materials, and personalities.

The bear is one of the traditional directional protectors, associated with the West and especially with strength.

Mountain lions are traditionally associated with hunting and protection and are recognized as guardians of the North.

These animals entered Zuni carving traditions through different histories. Bison are closely connected to sustenance and abundance, while horses became associated with movement and power.

Bird meanings depend heavily on the species. The eagle in particular holds an important place in Pueblo traditions and is associated with the sky; Pueblo sources also describe the eagle as a messenger.

In Zuni tradition, frogs are closely associated with water and rain, making them symbols of renewal, fertility, and life-giving abundance.

Human and ceremonial figures can represent people, cultural roles, stories and spiritual beings. Unlike animal fetishes, their meaning depends heavily on the specific figure being depicted.

A large collection of Zuni fetishes turned up at this weekend’s estate sale, and one maker kept standing out.

As we started laying them out, Domenic noticed the distinctive work of Gibbs Othole, especially his use of coral and the way animals are incorporated into each carving. Othole’s work was recognized with a SWAIA blue ribbon in 2007.
